On January 31, 1988, Doug Williams changed what was possible in professional football. As the starting quarterback for Washington in Super Bowl XXII, he became the first Black quarterback to start and win the biggest game in the sport - and he did it with one of the most dominant performances the stage has ever seen, throwing for 340 yards and four touchdowns to earn the game's Most Valuable Player award.
The heart of that night was a single quarter. After an early injury scare, Williams returned to author a record-shattering second quarter, firing four touchdown passes as Washington buried Denver 42-10. His 340 passing yards stood as a Super Bowl benchmark of the era, and the image of a Grambling State quarterback hoisting the Lombardi Trophy reset expectations for a generation of players who followed.
The road there ran through Grambling State and coach Eddie Robinson, where Williams became an All-American, a Heisman-caliber finisher, and a national name. Drafted 17th overall by Tampa Bay in 1978, he led the Buccaneers to the first playoff berths in franchise history, played in the USFL, and then wrote his name into the record books in Washington - a journey later chronicled in the NFL's 'A Football Life.'
His second act may be his most lasting. Williams built players and programs as head coach at his alma mater Grambling State, where he won multiple SWAC titles, then spent years shaping rosters as a personnel executive with Washington. Today he channels that same drive into HBCU advocacy, the Shack Harris & Doug Williams Foundation, mentoring young people, and the speaking stage - carrying a message about resilience, belief, and breaking barriers to audiences across the country.
